• What we do in Broad Street’s Title 1 Preschool

      While we spend some of the day working with letters and sounds, handwriting, and counting, here’s what else we will be doing…

      • Circle Time allows the entire class to review our daily calendar/schedule and plans share learning experiences, and practice newly acquired skills.  Circle activities are designed to stimulate thinking, enrich social skills, and expand attention spans.

       

      • Dramatic-play Housekeeping and Dress-up Center helps children express themselves, practice life skills, improve social skills, increase self-esteem, build vocabulary, and practice problem-solving skills… in addition to allowing for school fun time!

       

      • Art Center is used to help develop creative outlets for thoughts and feelings.  It helps reinforce fine-motor skills and concept development in areas such as colors, shapes, and size relationships.

       

      • Sand (and sometimes Water) Center allows children to experiment with textures and the properties of different substances.  It also encourages the development of discovery skills which will become important in math, science, and language.

       

      • Block Center helps develop shape and size discrimination, spatial relationships, number skills, balance, organization, cause and effect, and classification skills, as well as cooperative play, problem-solving, and creativity.

       

      • Reading/Listening Centers and Story Time help children develop an appreciation and enjoyment of literature.  Reading activities encourage vocabulary and comprehension skills and expand a child’s knowledge base.

       

      • Music activities encourage listening skills, creative expression, and social skills, along with sound, volume, tempo, and rhythm.

       

      • Science activities allow for hands-on observation, exploration, investigation, prediction making, and experimentation.

       

      • Fine-motor activities help improve small-muscle development and eye-hand coordination.  Such activities may include puzzle making, beads and laces, pegboards, crayon, and scissor use, as well as beginning handwriting/pencil work.

       

      • Gross-motor activities provide opportunities for children to use their muscles as they engage in fun, healthy exercise, such as running, jumping, catching, and following the leader.  In addition to our gym classes, we will play class games both inside and out.
