Nashua High School North

History

Since the 19th century, the City of Nashua has had one high school with a rich tradition for academic, athletic and personal excellence. As our community has grown, the need for a second high school increased. Several things were happening simultaneously, as the school became larger, some students began to feel a little lost; nationally, research began to show that the benefits of creating more personal connections with students. Studies began to demonstrate that large school which created smaller learning communities within a larger setting made it possible for teachers to know students well and to be able to recognize their strengths and to identify their needs.

In 1996, a group of faculty members at Nashua High School (then located on Riverside Drive) began to meet to discuss restructuring or reorganizing NHS. Supported by building administrators, the Office of the Superintendent and the Board of Education, our school began to reinvent itself. At the same time, the need to update our facility became increasingly obvious. Our structure was tired, old and did not enable us to meet our obligation to educate our students for an increasingly technological world.

After an 18-month series of public outreach meetings and forums with students, parents, community members, business groups and other organizations, the Board of Aldermen voted to bond $143M to support the renovation of Nashua High School South and the construction of Nashua High School North. Nashua High School North opened for classes in the fall of 2004.
